The last post
What a wonderful week! I have finally had a good look around the last part of Germany I hadn’t seen before and really enjoyed what the Black Forrest has to offer
Unfortunately, my week ended on a sour note! I was in Freiburg yesterday to have a last look round the beautiful old streets and alleys and have a typical Baden meal, I went back to a restaurant I had seen on the first day and I felt as though this would be the place to end the week. I thought it was my intuition that drew me there but I must have been wrong – my intuition doesn’t normally play tricks with me!
It turns out that the restaurant is world famous – the ‘Sickleschmiede’. I don’t know what to expect from something that is world famous but I know what I got; pre cooked and pre cut potatoes out of a bag that tasted like rubber and ,heaven help us, they don’t make their own ‘Spetzle’. It was the type of food you expect to be served at a motorway service station and not in Freiburg
It is unfortunate but this happens all over the world when dealing with tourism; a restaurant owner who just wants to make money, tired and indifferent waiters and a cook that is on the lowest wage hardly speaks the language and doesn’t know what he is cooking! Is it their fault or is this a result of mass tourism and price wars?
Nowadays, everyone wants a cheap holiday and the best service – how does that work?
Years ago, people travelled to broaden their minds and learn more – today I can travel to almost anywhere and eat the same food, drink the same beer and read the same newspaper that I have at home – surely, this isn’t what we want – or is it?

Don’t worry about the bad restaurant – it’s not worth it. Personally, I’m always very sceptical about superlatives like “world famous” or “best” – because I had to learn the same lesson you learnt yesterday: So often it’s more appearance than substance… (you only need to read their advert here (you might laugh now about it): http://www.sichelschmiede.de/de/restaurant.html )
Instead of worrying about the pre cooked potatoes you should be happy about the wonderful journey you had. All the beautiful moments… And thank you again for sharing your experiences with us!
I have experienced something similar as well. I was in Salzburg (decades ago), and we went to this “must-see” restaurant that (was suppose to have) had the best food there. I have to admit I forgot the name and even the food, but I remember how bad it was and how we didn’t finish our meals…
Sad, but true…
